After the first year of the Troll Bar just knew I needed pyrotechnics. I also knew it needed to be in a brass instrument of some description.
After 2 years of covid and a lengthy search for a trumpet that was beyond repair so as not to deprive anyone of a cheap instrument. (Comfortably the cheapest trumpet in the UK at the time at £25)
I actually had all the components I needed sitting dormant for a couple of years waiting for events to start again after covid. So as soon as I knew things were opening up again I got building.
It’s radio controlled by a small key-fob I can keep attached to myself to ensure it’s only ever lit when I can see it.
After it’s first outing at Burning Nest ’22 I attached it to a length of copper tubing so I could walk around with it illuminating my way.
Initially it was going to be called the “Blasoon” but once “Flambone” come to me I couldn’t imagine it called anything else. When queried a number of times on the fact that it was in fact a Trumpet and not a Trombone. I simply responded that it had clearly transcended being a Trumpet and could identify itself anyway it so pleased. A sentiment close to my heart.
A small note to anyone else who might want to make such a thing.
You will be asked if you can still play it.
You will will be asked if you can make the flames bigger.
I find telling people that you can’t wait to see their fire trumpet and how brilliant it’s going to be tends to do the trick.
